Food and Wine Pairings for Burgers, Chinese Food, Mexican Food, Pizza and More "On the Go" Meals
Article by Kathy Hayes
Food and wine do go together. For many of us wine is a daily part of our evening meal. Because of our very busy lifestyle the food we place on the dinner table is often picked up on the way home from work, soccer games and doctor's appointments or delivered right to our front door. Popular fare is burgers, Mexican food, Chinese food, pizza, sushi, hot dogs and fried chicken. Some suggestions of wines to pair with these selections and to always have on hand in your wine rack will help you have not only a convenient meal but a delicious one as well.
Long gone are the days of red wine with meat and white with fish and chicken. We have learned to be much more adventurous with our selections and with many wonderful results. It is true, however, that most people prefer either red or white wine so both are included for each of our "on the go" meals.
Nothing is more American than a good burger. Whether you pick up burgers on the way home or quickly grill on your own barbecue burgers have lots of beefy flavor. The char of the grill lends to pairing a Shiraz, which is always a safe match for beef. If you have a Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot in the rack they will also match the robust flavors of beef. We cannot forget our white wine drinkers, so a barrel aged California Chardonnay with its oaky flavor meets the char of the grill very nicely.
Mexican food is full of spices, chiles, cilantro and garlic making California Red Zinfandel with its dry, peppery and berry flavors a delicious match. An acidic white, such as Sauvignon Blanc and a fruity white, like a Riesling, will satisfy those preferring a white choice.
Many flavors come together in Chinese foods, soy sauce, garlic, chiles, sweet and sour and crunchy. German Gewurztraminer or German Riesling will compliment these dishes beautifully as they blend well with salads and a variety of vegetables. For a red wine, Beaujolais, made from the Gamay grape, is especially fruity and low in tannin bringing out the more subtle tastes of the stir fry.
Have a bottle of Chianti on hand to pour when pizza is on the table. Chianti can handle the rich cheese and tangy tomato sauce. An Italian Barbera or Dolcetto are also delicious choices with pizza. Sauvignon Blanc as a white wine choice works with this famous and often eaten entree.
Sushi lovers will want to keep a bottle of sweeter Champagne or sparkling wine handy. A Sec or Demi Sec which are sweeter selections for Champagne will contrast nicely with the spicy wasabi.
Pull out a bottle of very fruity Beaujolais for the fattier entrees such as hot dogs and fried chicken. For the white wine drinker having either a Sauvignon Blanc or German Riesling in your wine rack will have you always prepared for these two quick and favorite meals.
Sip and enjoy and have more time for all the many things that have to get done in the busy evening hours. Cheers!
